The Elementary School

Our elementary school is a diverse community that values quality education within a Christian environment for our students by providing a rigorous and comprehensive standards-based and inquiry-rich curriculum, a number of activities, and daily contact with our dedicated and experienced teachers. As of 2008, we are the first International Baccalaureate (IB) authorized Primary Years Program (PYP) school in South Korea.

Our prekindergarten is our entrance level to our formal elementary education program. All students enrolled in the prekindergarten program should be 4 years of age by the first day of school. It is a half-day program that focuses on the education of the whole child by focusing on language development, basic number skills, PYP units of inquiry, experiential learning, engaging activities and play that fosters an excitement for learning. Language development lessongs focus mainly on letter recognition, listening and speaking. As an introduction to a formal school setting, students will learn daily routines and procedures that will ease the transition into kindergarten, while learning about them and their world around them. Prekindergarten is assessed for learning just as the other elementary grades.

Our prekindergarten through fifth grade program is organized by grade levels with one teacher per grade through fifth grade students. Teaching assistants are available depending upon enrollment. Our students are challenged to be life-long learners with an international mind-set. Our school-year encompasses 180 school days, and reflects the observance of some Korean and American holidays.

The majority of our elementary faculty consists of certified elementary teachers, serving in their area of certification. They consider working at TCIS their calling, as they work with children in this IB and Christian international setting. Professional development opportunities are on-going, relevant, and address current educational trends applicable to quality international school programs.
