These staff area also responsible for teaching our English Language Acquisition courses and, thus, can use their knowledge of the English language support that ELL students need in their subject areas to supplement what is done within English Language Acquisition courses.
English Language Support Programs at TCIS
TCIS is a member of the WIDA International Schools Consortium (WISC), which is a network of international schools that subscribe to the “World Class Instructional Design and Assessment” (WIDA) model for English Language Acquisition. This model was developed in 2002 in the United States in order to help schools improve their ELL services through enhancing ELL students’ academic language development as well as improving their academic achievement.
WIDA is comprised of high quality English Language Development Standards and a set of assessments for all four-language domains (reading, speaking, writing, listening). WIDA also provides professional development for English Language Acquisition Specialist teachers as well as for subject area teachers who need support for their work with students who do not possess near mother tongue English language proficiency.
TCIS uses WIDA’s English Language Development Standards and assessment to drive the delivery of its English Language Support program across Grades K-12. In addition, TCIS provides teachers with professional development to assist them with the delivery of their varied and academically challenging curricula to all students, including ELL students.
Goals for the TCIS English Language Support Program
TCIS is proud of its diverse student population, including the diversity of linguistic backgrounds and English language proficiency levels that our students possess. In this regard, TCIS strives for inclusion of all ELL students within its mainstream curriculum and courses. TCIS also strives to provide as much support as possible for ELL students to engage fully with the content of their courses while also developing their English language proficiency in all four language domains: reading, speaking, listening, writing. Our ELL students’ progress in relation to WIDA’s English language proficiency standards is monitored regularly, and, as a result; the TCIS ELL Support Program is adjusted throughout the school year to meet current ELL students’ needs.
