Taejon Christian International School (TCIS) announced on the 19th that Gina Jeong recently donated the scholarship(5 million won) to support children from low-income families in Noeun 1-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. Ms. Gina Jeong is a Student Ambassador at TCIS, and she leads various activities, such as providing piano lessons to elementary and middle school students outside of school. “I feel happy when I help others as I learn from my parents, and I want to continue giving in the future,” she said. Her vision is to contribute to creating a peaceful and sustainable planet.

Briefly explain your motivation for donations.

  • I have always been interested in helping underprivileged children, and since February 2022, I have regularly donated to the Green Umbrella Children's Foundation to protect and support education for those who live overseas. For the last two years, I have received a scholarship at my school, so this time, I wanted to help children live nearby and decided to donate it to underprivileged children in Noeun 1-dong. Living in Noeun 1-dong for over 12 years, I was grateful for things I have received, and had a great desire to give.

How was this scholarship funded?

  • A merit scholarship is provided to students at TCIS, selected from those with excellent grades, service, and leadership qualifications; I received it last year and this year. This scholarship supports underprivileged children in Noeun 1-dong, donates digital pianos to local children's centers, and supports tuition.

I am curious whether there is any particular motivation for helping others and participating in volunteer work despite your busy life inside and outside of school.

  • Since I was young, my parents have taught me the importance of giving to others and working to make the world a better place. In addition, the entire family is trying to follow Jesus' example of living a life of giving. So, I think I naturally developed this sense of purpose. And because I am the type of person who feels happiness and pride in helping others, I find value in my life.

Ms. Gina Jeong has also engaged in various volunteer activities.

  • As for volunteer work outside of school, I have served as a piano teacher for elementary and middle school students at the Noeun Area Children's Center since December 2022. At the end of 2022, I purchased a new digital piano and donated it to the Noeun Community Children's Center. Within my school, I am engaged in various volunteer activities such as serving as a student ambassador (New Student Ambassador), designing yearbooks, translating Korean traditional fairy tales for children in South Sudan, and leading STEAM science camp activities.

Please tell us your dreams and vision for the future.

  • The big vision is to contribute to creating a peaceful and sustainable world. I am currently interested in chemical engineering, and through research on sustainable energy use, I would like to help future generations enjoy the same beautiful planet. In addition, I would like to continue a life of giving to others with consideration and understanding. Meanwhile, Na Byeong-yong, the head of Noeun 1-dong, who received the donation, said, “I was touched by Gina Jeong’s good deed,” and “I will use the donation well for the children and teenagers in the district.”
