The Role of the School Counselor
TCIS school counselors are vital members of the educational team in the TCIS community. As student advocates, they seek to support students in all aspects of their lives: personal/social/spiritual development, academic achievement, and post-secondary/career plans. The counselors meet individually with students on a regular basis and deliver classroom guidance lessons that are culturally and developmentally appropriate. They also collaborate with administration, teachers, and parents to maximize every student’s potential. The primary goal of the TCIS counselors is to help students discover themselves and their future direction in life.
TCIS Counseling Philosophy
TCIS Counseling Program is comprehensive in scope, preventative in design, and developmental in nature. With our student-focused approach, we work collaboratively with families and teachers to empower students in a safe, respectful, and confidential environment.
TCIS Counseling Beliefs
The TCIS Comprehensive Counseling Program does the following:
- supports the TCIS Mission Statement and IB Learner Profile
- addresses academic, career/post-secondary, personal/social, and spiritual development of all students
The Counselors at TCIS believe that all students:
- should feel accepted, respected, and safe
- are capable of change and growth
All TCIS Counselors:
- are student-focused
- adhere to the ethical standards of the International School Counselor Association (ISCA) and International Association for College Admission Counseling (Int’l ACAC)
- work as part of a community, partnering with parents, educators and community resources
- serve as advocates who help students realize their unique strengths, personality traits, and potential
Confidentiality
In adherence with ISCA’s Code of Ethics, all information, conversations, records, and data shared in the context of counseling services are confidential and limited to the parties involved. The counselors at TCIS will not share protected information without the permission of students and/or parents. They do, however, balance their obligation to students with an understanding of parental rights. They promote student autonomy while recognizing the importance of parents’ guiding voice in decision-making. In cases where a student’s safety is at risk, parents will be immediately notified and the student will be referred to psychological services in the community as needed. Other outside parties (such as schools, colleges/universities, and employers) will not be notified.
Grade Level Counseling Programs
Child Protection Advocate
Working specifically toward the education, implementation and monitoring of child protection issues in our school, this advocate plays an important role at TCIS. The Child Protection Advocate works on behalf of children according to the policies of TCIS and the Korean National Government. Contact rheeka@tcis.or.kr with questions.
