Grade 8 Sustainable Farm Trip

Dragon Drop Stories  September 10, 2025

Last week, our Grade 8 students stepped outside the classroom and into the world of innovation with a visit to an institute for sustainable farming. The trip tied directly into their interdisciplinary studies, where the theme of 'time' is guiding their learning this semester.

In science, students have been studying plants and their growth cycles, while in design, they are exploring hydroponic systems—soil-free methods of growing food that highlight both efficiency and sustainability. By bringing these strands together, students were able to see how agriculture has changed over centuries – from traditional farming methods passed down through generations, to today’s advanced technologies that are shaping the future of food production.

During their visit, students learned how innovation has transformed farming—introducing automation, hydroponics, and sustainable practices—while also recognizing the ways in which some fundamentals of agriculture remain unchanged.

This field trip gave our students not only a glimpse into the future of sustainable farming but also a chance to reflect on the continuity and change in human interaction with the environment. It was a powerful reminder that understanding the past and present is essential for imagining better ways forward.
